DOME  IN  ROTUNDA  MURAL  PUBLIC  ART 

Awarded by the City of Lauderhill | Florida | 2009

For this ceiling mural project, Georgeta’s skills as an artist melded with her life in Greece (2000-2002) and South Florida.

Using the Greek Parthenon, a symbol of democracy as her muse, Georgeta exchanged the flora and fauna of Greece with the local birds, flowers, plants, and trees of South Florida. The mural invites visitors to reconnect to history and admire Florida’s local scenery.

The trompe l’oeil technique adds to the mural’s depth and makes the viewer perceive the whole dome as a ‘real’ scene.

Georgeta ‘borrowed’ one of the magnificent colorful bands from the once-colorful Greek Parthenon and placed it at the base of the dome to give the mural a formal and elegant look. To achieve even more depth in the mural, she added a faux coral stone base. 

Her intention for this concept was to pay homage to the democracy of the City of Lauderhill. This project was so well received that soon, Georgeta was awarded a second public art project, then a third, and a fourth…

TROMPE L’OEIL AND PHOTOREALISM:

Both trompe l’oeil and photorealism involve depicting something realistic, but there are a few differences:

Trompe l’oeil is intended to fool the eye into thinking something is really there.
An example would be Michael Harnett‘s art.

A trompe l’oeil artist wants to trick the viewer with the illusion of three-dimensionality, while photorealism aims
simply to recreate an image as realistically as possible, in two dimensions.

Photorealist artists’ work depends heavily on a high-resolution photograph.
An example would be the artist Audrey Flack.
Trompe l’oeil is a tradition that goes way, way back before photography existed.

To Giovanni da Pistoia
“When the Author Was Painting the Vault of the Sistine Chapel”

I’ve already grown a goiter from this torture,
hunched up here like a cat in Lombardy
(or anywhere else where the stagnant water’s poison).
My stomach’s squashed under my chin, my beard’s
pointing at heaven, my brain’s crushed in a casket,
my breast twists like a harpy’s. My brush,
above me, all the time dribbles paint
so my face makes a fine floor for droppings!

My haunches are grinding into my guts,
my poor ass strains to work as a counterweight,
every gesture I make is blind and aimless.
My skin hangs loose below me, my spine’s
