LAUDERHILL  STORY  MURAL  PUBLIC  ART

The “Lauderhill Story Mural” gallery provides a few images of the East curved wall outside the City’s Chamber in the City of Lauderhill, Florida.

This public art project is fascinating to me to this day: I drew my inspiration from both the Classical art of Greece and old Florida architecture,

blending these influences to create a unique visual narrative.

While studying at the Athens School of Visual Art during my post-graduate studies, I was immersed in the streets of Athens.

The city of Athens, with its rich history and ancient architecture, has offered a wealth of inspiration for many of my canvases and murals.

As I continued to make art, the memories, and inspirations from my time in Greece, continued to infuse and inspire my work in many ways.

In this wall mural, for instance, I chose to create a sense of coexistence by adding a Classical style porch with Ionic columns and a balustrade that reflects the timeless elegance of Greek architecture with Key West ginger-style architecture. The ornamental band on the upper side of the mural

draws inspiration from the once-colorful Greek Parthenon, adding an elegant touch, a sense of grandeur and sophistication,

reminiscent of the majestic buildings that have stood the test of time. This nod to the Greek Parthenon symbolizes the mural’s

connection to democratic principles, mirroring the Greek influence in architecture.

MORE ABOUT THE MURAL

The Lauderhill Story mural portrays a view from a porch with two distinct “wings.” On the left side, a Key West-style porch with gingerbread designs embodies the charm and character of old Florida architecture. On the right side, a Classical style porch with Ionic columns and

a balustrade reflects the timeless elegance of Greek architecture. 

The mural incorporates various symbolic and cultural elements that contribute to Lauderhill’s unique identity.

A waterfall on the left side, along with the Inverrary Golf Course, evokes the beauty of nature and recreational activities enjoyed in the city.

The inclusion of Jackie Gleason, the famous entertainer, is a tribute to his role in initiating and supporting the Inverrary Golf Course. 

A peacock, cricket, and football attributes further enhance the mural’s representation of the city’s diverse culture and interests.

The city hall building and the US, Florida, and Lauderhill flags add a sense of civic pride and unity.

This public mural serves as a reminder of Lauderhill City’s rich history and its commitment to preserving

its unique identity for generations to come.

ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY

Athens in the 5th to 4th century BCE had an extraordinary system of government: democracy.

Under this system, all male citizens had equal political rights, freedom of speech, and the opportunity to participate directly
in the political arena. Further, not only did citizens participate in a direct democracy whereby they themselves made the decisions
by which they lived, but they also actively served in the institutions that governed them,
