City’s Art Movement Continues with Fire Rescue Mural

The City of Oakland Park is proud to announce the completion of the mural at Fire Station 87 (2100 NW 39 Street). The mural is an extremely colorful and lifelike representation of the everyday activities of the Oakland Park Fire Rescue Department.

The mural artist is Georgeta Fondos – an emerging artist and adjunct professor of art at Broward College and Palm Beach State College. Her prominent public murals include the Dome in Rotunda and the East Curved Wall (City of Lauderhill) and the Terrazzo floor design for the Performing Arts Center of Lauderhill.

The mural serves as a backdrop for fire safety education at the Fire Station, including family fire exit drills, Stop Drop and Roll, and how to access 911 in an emergency. Children can use the mural as inspiration for their own artwork and hopefully encourage some future firefighter/emergency medical technicians. Don’t be surprised if you see some student art pop up in other places. Last year, the City incorporated student art on the new bus benches in Oakland Park.

Arts and Culture continue to be a major aspect of the “POP” (Proud Oakland Park) effort. A new Arts and Culture Board, appointed by the City Commission, started meeting in October. This Board advises the City Commission on arts and cultural activities Citywide, including Public Art. The City’s Art Park was chosen as a site for one of nine Broward 100 murals to be installed in early Spring 2015. In March, the Art Park will also host an original sculpture by students involved in a Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art project, funded by the Community Foundation of Broward.
