Mural Shares Important Health Message
Thirty-three submissions were entered. A panel of seven jurors from the arts community and healthcare professionals narrowed the lot down. Broward College art professor Georgeta Fondos emerged as the winner. Fondos is an accomplished muralist. Her portfolio shows a range of large scale projects. Recent works include a firefighter mural for the city of Oakland Park and a sea wall for Broward Medical’s Children’s Cancer Center in Davie. Before adapting a design for Art to End AIDS, Fondos dove into research. She read extensively and watched documentaries to see the struggles of HIV and AIDS patients. “It inspired me. I noticed a common theme, a call to action. To get people educated and get them tested,” Fondos said.

Art Proves to be Good Draw (Conclusion)
LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — In southern Florida, a floor-to-ceiling hand-painted mural of Lady Liberty beckons the huddled masses of basket-toting patrons to step inside a patriotic-themed laundry… Art takes center stage with the prominent display of patriotism here at Liberty Laundry. Proprietor and 29-year U.S. Air Force active duty service member Bill Pederson wouldn’t have it any other way. “I wanted something to tie into liberty and keep in line with the name of the laundry,” he says of his search two years ago to add a special touch to the 1,800-square-foot coin-op. With a 31-washer, 33-dryer-pocket rehab project nearing completion, Pederson consulted with local professional fine artist and college instructor Georgeta Fondos, whose commissioned murals grace a number of South Florida’s municipal buildings…
Broward College Professor and Student Volunteers Unveil Art to End AIDS Mobile Mural
Georgeta Fondos cherishes any opportunity she can use her art to draw attention to social issues and important causes. This is why the adjunct Broward College professor was honored to be selected out of 30 proposals to create an Art to End AIDS mural. Fondos enlisted the help of former students to share in the artistic experience and process. Broward College alumni Kendy Calixte, Tom Berringer, and Allan Buhl worked side-by-side their professor to bring her vision to life. Fondos’ work is inspired by the Romantic landscape of the 19th century. This particular piece features ocean waves crashing on a beach with seagulls flying above and a sailboat traveling in the distance. “I want people to enjoy the landscape, but to know they can choose life and choose to be healthy because this is one disease you can control,” Fondos said. “We want them to choose life because life is beautiful.”
