FIREFIGHTERS MURAL PUBLIC ART
Awarded by the City of Oakland Park | Fire Rescue #87 | Oakland Park | Florida
The Firefighters Mural is a very special project in my portfolio. Prior to starting the mural, I spent some time with the firefighters
at the station listening to their stories and understanding their activities, learning about their equipment, and the essence of their work.
This hands-on approach allowed me to develop a better understanding of the firefighters’ daily lives, their commitment,
and their dedication to protecting and serving the community.
To ensure accuracy and authenticity in depicting the scenes, I took photographs of the firefighters in their uniforms, masks,
and helmets. This attention to detail and consultation with the firefighters themselves allowed me to depict the use of equipment
with precision, making the mural an accurate representation of the firefighters and their activities.
The mural’s primary goal was to beautify the Oakland Park Fire Rescue Station, giving it a distinct identity that reflects the important work
done by the firefighters. I was interested in creating a visual representation of the firefighters in action and showcasing the station’s
commitment to serving and protecting the community. Beyond its aesthetic value, the mural is designed to engage and educate children
who visit the station, allowing them to learn about the activities and responsibilities of firefighters. Through the mural’s depiction of various
scenes showcasing the firefighters’ activities both at the station and during on-call duties, children gain insights into the daily lives
and heroic efforts of the firefighters.

MORE ABOUT THE MURAL
The chief’s vision of inviting children to create their own drawings based on what they learn from the mural fosters a sense of
engagement and connection between the community and the station. By exhibiting the children’s drawings on the opposite wall
from the mural, the fire station becomes a space that reflects the shared experiences and appreciation for the firefighters’ efforts.
The opportunity to work closely with the firefighters and create this meaningful artwork became a transformative experience for the artist.
The project’s success is a result of the collaborative efforts and support from Kathleen Margoles – Special Projects Coordinator at the
City of Oakland Park, Chief Donald Widing – Chief of Fire Rescue, Greg Lewis – Support Service Coordinator,
and all the firemen at Stations #87 and #9. Their contributions and collaboration with the artist allowed the mural
to be a true reflection of the firefighters’ dedication, courage, and preparedness.
